New Silo – A Landmark Success At Hinkley!

The recently installed 35 metre high 5,000 tonne Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) silo is to become a new landmark on the Hinkley Point C project site and will play a pivotal role while construction is ongoing. BYLOR’s (Bouygues TP and Laing O’Rourke) Enabling Works Delivery Manager, Kevin Dean commented, ‘Once complete, this 35 metre high silo will be one of the project landmarks. After the structure is completed, the pipework, M&E and generators can be fitted allowing it to be operational and form a key element of our construction delivery strategy’.

The photograph shows a 500 tonne mobile crane lifting the first silo ring into place with Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) attending to complete the assembly after the ring is lifted into place and secured.

The GGBS comes from the steel making industry, and is a valuable additive for the concrete production at Hinkley Point C as it gives the concrete enhanced physical properties. The GGBS reduces the carbon footprint of the construction project, as it is a recycled material and used as a proven, tried and tested extender to the clinker from which various grades of cement are manufactured. The silo is a truly European project. The blowers and feed system came from Germany and the silo body from Italy. The silo bottom was manufactured in Wales and the specialist installation teams are based in the North of England.

Fairport Engineering is managing the project with BYLOR and has their project delivery team based on site in order to safely manage the installation under the C(DM) 2015 regulations.
